The Hotel Valley Ho
Magical History Tour
Design Elements Discussed; Star sightings Revealed
Hotel Valley Ho, one of the best known mid-century modern hotels in the country offers architectural walking tours of the buildings and grounds. Led by experts from Scottsdale’s Ultimate Art & Cultural Tours, the walks give a historical perspective to the mid-century modern design of the Hotel Valley Ho which opened in 1956. The hotel was designed by Edward L. Varney, an architect who was light years ahead of his time. He incorporated intelligent, minimalist design creating this Arizona landmark.
While remaining true to the original architecture, architect Mark Philp and interior designers Cole-Martinez have carefully updated the Valley Ho keeping “one foot firmly in the present with subtle salutes to the past”. This property has been hailed as the best example of restored mid-century architecture in a hotel property.
Over the years Hotel Valley Ho was the “private” getaway spot for Hollywood stars visiting Arizona including Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. The hotel also was the location for teenage heartthrobs Robert Wagner and Natalie Woods’ 1957 wedding reception.
Saved from the wrecking ball in 2003 by Westroc Hotels & Resorts the Hotel Valley Ho stands as a landmark structure in downtown Scottsdale and today the vibe is Rat Pack for the 21st century.
On your 90 minute tour you will visit some of the loving restored rooms, the hotel’s restaurant, ZuZu, which serves its take on comfort food, go up on the rooftop of the 6 story condominium tour for the most spectacular view of Scottsdale and surrounding Valley available anywhere.
Come and be transported back in time!
The tours cost $19.56 (the year the hotel opened!) per person. Fee includes discounts for VH Spa services and Café Zu Zu.
